The First Night

I am laying on the roof of the car next to him. We went out driving late like we always do. The cycle is always he gets off work at ten, picks me up, and we just drive. Never a destination, just a journey taken together. Tonight we stop on a random gravel road after leaving Bloomington. We stop here to stargaze as the sky was especially bright and clear. The wind takes its turns running over and past us, bringing the smell of the lush greenery around us. A cool, mid-summer breeze that brushes across my skin and makes the tall corn stalks rustle, disturbed.

The moon glows to our right, highlighting the landscape as we watch her slowly climb her way across the sky. Above us the heavens glitter a dark mid-night blue. There are so many stars.

This night is different than all those that have passed; tonight we are entranced with a meteor shower. It’s light, a few sparks dance across the sky here and there, now and then. Shooting stars. He looks at me. I look back. He smiles. I know what to wish for.

We don’t love each other yet, but we will.
