Does being friends first work?

A little over 5 months ago I had a disappointing breakup that left me a little bruised emotionally. A few weeks after I started hanging around a friend more and was introduced into their friend circle. One of the men who is also single caught my eye but I wasn’t ready to give dating in general my time so I kept quiet. It became pretty obvious he was interested as well fairly quickly and a small group of us began hanging out 1-3 times a week with a week of nothing here and there. In the last 5 months we’ve spent a lot of time getting to know one another platonically....fast forward and last weekend we slept together. I know he likes me and he has been very clear he does in his way and I believe I’ve been clear and upfront that I do as well.

Did I mess up by sleeping with him? I don’t regret it at all. It was seriously the best I’ve ever had and the chemistry we have is amazing. BUT did I doom this by not actually dating first? The last 5 months have been filled with low key flirting and covert tension so this was definitely in the making.

I’ve always been extremely private and introverted. My (23M) girlfriend (25F) relationship is confusing to me. I might be the problem, or maybe we are just incompatible.

I met my girlfriend after a few serious breakups that led me to change both intentionally and unintentionally over a few years. For better and for worse.
