What is talking

I have been messaging this guy (we have mutual friends and know each other from college) for over a month. We hung out a couple times one-on-one. We text every day. Do normal guys text this often? Is he just very outgoing? Is this what "talking to" someone is? Didn't want to include too much detail but I was just wondering since I don't have many people to ask.
