Awkward silence during meals. How often does that happen to you?

I’m about to propose to a wonderful girl. We have/had great chemistry but sometimes during meals we just have nothing interesting to say to each other and the silence is getting awkward. So i did what most sensible men do, i started playing with my phone and of course she hates it. Thing is, i did try to initiate conversations by telling her things, but at times she just didnt respond or even acknowledge what i just said (neutral happenings or point of view about harmless things; nothing provocative) and so it really doesnt gv me much incentive to initiate things these days. Fyi, we have dated for about a year and have both acknowledged we loved each other and should get married. We are both in our late 30s. Are awkward silences part of your relationship as well?
