How much does chemistry matter hour 1?

I went on a date yesterday with someone I met online but who I just haven’t met in person by happenstance. We have flaked from the same events and have a lot of common people. Yesterday we met for the first time for an hour, the conversation was good and easy and we had a lot to talk about. Today he says he just doesn’t feel any chemistry. While I think chemistry is important, to me the first hour of talking to someone is more about, can we hold a good conversation and do we have things in common? I think chemistry plays a part after a bit more time. Am I completely off base? Do you need to wow someone hour one or you’re out of luck?
