When infatuation/honeymoon feelings fade, can anyone describe to me why they always say that’s “when true love is born”?

It’s no secret that every human can become addicted to the chemical rush of “new love”, and mistake that rush fading as the death of a relationship. When that spark is gone, and a new sense of love is found, what prevents people from falling in love with other people while still “loving” you? It really makes me question the nature of love, and view it as very fickle.
