What is the difference between loving someone and being in love?

I was seeing a guy a few weeks ago and he was telling me about his past. He lived with his girlfriend a few months before we met and they parted ways because he realized that he loved her very dearly, but wasn’t in love with her.

I have been thinking hard about this since then and I do realize that relationships can get monotonous after a while.

However what is it that is different about these two thing? How would I know when I’m in love?
