Is it insulting to ask for changes after first meet?

I am a 50-YO woman, met a mid-50s guy OLD, we agreed to a quick coffee meeting. I liked a lot about his personality, and he's a good-looking guy, and he liked me. However, I was surprsied that his personal style was a little more flashy than I anticipated from his on line profile. Big gold chain around his neck, and lot of cologne. But also he's from Greece (we are in upper Midwest) so I am thinking it's possible some of this is just cultural differences and surface stuff.

So my question is, would it be weird if I ask him to perhaps not wear cologne for a first actual date?

I don't want him to feel personally criticized, and Lord knows I'd think it odd if a guy was like "hey I like you but can you wear nicer shoes" or something of that ilk. Perhaps this is the same. But yet, I don't want surface differences to get in the way of getting to know each-other, if there's a chance we really continue to enjoy each-other's company.

Your thoughts, DOT?
