Concerned about using lube during sex

Hi! Long time lurker, first time posting.

I (F) an bit bummed about experience I just had with my bf. I don’t know if I’m being too self-conscious/ridiculous or if someone would feel the same way, so I would appreciate some other opinion.

Long story short, we were about to have penetrative sex but I was dry. Very unusual for me, so I’m bit worried about that - but that’s another story (hopefully it was caused just by not drinking enough water...?). Well anyways, lucky for us, we remembered that we have some lube. I’m never dry like that, so we never used lube before (we got it as a present for a big purchase). So I ask my boyfriend to use the lube on me. And he was like... “no, you do it. You should put it on yourself.” Well, a bit strange, I mean I thought putting the lube on could be used as a bit of a foreplay for the penetration, but whatever, no harsh feelings even if I’m bummed since I asked for it first. So I (sorry if this is TMI but I figure this is the right sub for it) put a bit on my hand and started to tease my clit with it, preparing to “work” my way down to my vagina entrance. And my boyfriend’s reaction was like... “what are you doing. That’s not where you should put the lube.” So I answered that well you know, babe, that’s my clit and I thought I could put the lube on in a bit exciting way that would also make me feel good (plus I thought it could potentionally be hot for him to watch, but I didn’t mention that. I guess I was wrong in thinking that). And he then just got sorta defensive that he knows where my clit is.

Not wanting to argue any further I just quickly prepared myself and we had an okayish-sex but nothing mind-blowing, I think partly also because my mind was not really not that much into it anymore. So I guess my question is... was I being ridiculous with the lube? People just quickly put it in and bang? I don’t know, I also felt a bit upset that he didn’t even help me “prepare” and then tried to make me feel like idiot for putting the lube where I did (aka making it sound like I don’t even know where my vagina is, wth am I you doing??) sorry for the long rant, I guess I also just kinda needed to get it off my chest.
