So confused about the current situation with the guy I like

This past summer I spent 3 weeks at my college for a summer program. There were 12 of us in the program including me (20F) and this guy (19M), let's call him Josh. While attending the summer program we all exchanged social media so we are friends on Snapchat and Facebook, follow each other on Instagram, and have each other's phone number. After we went home for the summer, I didn't see him again or really talk to him again until the fall when we came back for classes. He and I ended up having one class together and ended up together in a group of 6 people for a semester-long project, along with my best friend. Towards the middle of the semester, she asked me what I thought of Josh and said that she thought we would be cute together. I hadn't really thought about it much until that point but I realized that I did really like him.

During finals week we texted a little and same with over Christmas break. He sent me streaks one day on Snapchat and I responded. The next day I sent him a snap and he responded. On the third day he didn't respond to the snap that I sent him. Once we started the new semester he's in one of my classes and also has a class with my roommate. We haven't talked much this semester, but when we do I usually have to initiate the conversation and it never really goes much further than chatting about classes or anything.

So this is where I get confused. On Wednesday, he and my roommate ended up in a group in the class that they have together. She knew who he was but he had no idea who she was. He mentioned the class that we took together last year and my roommate was like, "oh do you know my roommate?" He responded, "yeah, I know her! She's one of my good friends. We're pretty tight." I would say that we're friends, but definitely not "tight." He ended up swiping up on one of my Snapchat stories on Wednesday as well and we texted for a little while. My roommate wanted his notes so I got those for her and then he pretty much ended the conversation with a "ohhh, yeahhhh." I never responded after that.

So I guess, what are your thoughts on the situation? Are we literally just friends? Do I have a chance with him? I don't have much dating experience and I'm definitely too nervous to ask him our or tell him flat out that I like him. It'd just be nice to know if he felt the same way or maybe have him initiate a conversation every once in a while. How can I go a little deeper into the conversation if we already know each other? I'm horrible at keeping a conversation going and it feels like we know each other too well for the typical "getting to know you" questions.
