What does he mean? I need more opinions

Okay so I’m just a girl (16) talking about a guy I really like (17). We had a really deep conversation once and he said something I look back to that I don’t fully understand. We had this conversation through text so I’ll tell a little bit about it just so you can have a better idea of the conversation.

Him: “Look I really like you and you have turned school into something to look forward to I don’t know what I would do without you. I fully meant when I said I would do anything for you.”
Me: “And I meant when I said I trust your words. I believe you and really like you as well. Time goes by faster when I’m with you, it’s like it never lasts long enough. I’ll continue to wait though until I see you again.”
Him: “I don’t want our relationship to end, at least for a while. Even if you want a more intimate relationship I wouldn’t mind. You mean the world to me and I wouldn’t give that up for anything or anyone.”

I’m confused on when he said, “at least for a while.” We are friends right now but we act like a couple when we hold hands and lean closer to each other. Does this mean he isn’t ready for a commitment of a full relationship or does it mean he just wants to take things slowly so it works out? I want it to work out and I’m fine with waiting, I mean we haven’t even gone on a date yet. Unless... going to his place just the two of us is considered a date. I just want to know the true meaning behind his words, what do you think it means?
