First time didn’t really... work

Me and my girlfriend, after almost a week of anticipation, where ready to have sex for both of our first times. It started off normally, kissing, fingering, etc. But when I tried to go in, if you will, I just couldn’t. My penis would not go into the hole and we tried like 3 times, and by the 2nd time I had started going soft. I ended up eating her out and fingering her until she finished, and she gave me head afterwards, but we were both bummed out we couldn’t figure out what to do. We’re gonna try again Saturday, and this time probably we’ll have lube. Any tips on how to make sure next time goes better?

I’ve always been extremely private and introverted. My (23M) girlfriend (25F) relationship is confusing to me. I might be the problem, or maybe we are just incompatible.

I met my girlfriend after a few serious breakups that led me to change both intentionally and unintentionally over a few years. For better and for worse.
