I'm in quite the predicament

So about 8 or 9 months ago I (17M) asked a girl (16F) to something similar to a homecoming dance on a date and was rejected. She said that she wasn't looking to be in a relationship at that moment in time, however I suspect that it was a mix of her stated reason and me not being great at taking care of myself (think chubby short nerd who doesn't frequently shave, yeah, I cringed too). I've started working out regularly and have gotten skinnier as well as gotten on top of doing better with my hygiene. I'm still a nerd, but a little less awkward and less overbearing with my nerdiness.

I want to ask her on a date, but I'm not sure if that is socially acceptable. It seems like she is flirting with me, but I am notoriously bad at reading signs like flirting. Should I go for it? Should I wait and ask in a few months? Should I take the L and move on?

I really like this girl, she's super nice, smart, and down-to-earth. She checks off pretty much all the green flags, and some of friends told me that they think we would be a good couple. I wish I just weren't so desperate 8 or 9 months ago, which I'm sure she saw straight through.
