Is it better to ask them on a date or to hangout?

First pls don’t come for the fact that I (f18) ask out guys. So usually I ask guys I like to hangout and not “oh do you wanna go on a date?” Is that making a difference on how they will show up or act? I kinda just realized this is why I think I haven’t been on dates before it’s because of my phrasing but when I describe these hangouts to my friends they think they are dates. I feel like I end up oddly friend-zoning myself. So is wording important in these situations. I asked a guy to hangout but I feel like I should’ve said date but idk. Hopefully at the end of the hangout he’ll ask me but if he say “do you wanna hangout next week” does that mean friends? Like I don’t wanna ask him just because we have been talking long enough to have that conversation again yk.

Anyway the question is basically how important is wording and am I over thinking this?
