Dealing with Catfish situation (Almost got catfished)

I (25,F) matched with a guy on Tinder who super liked me and who I thought was attractive. We start to talk and he became intent on meeting up immediately. When I finally responded to him, he set up a date immediately. Something told me to ask for his Instagram and when he gave it to me I was shocked. He is at least 50 pounds heavier in real life in current Instagram pictures and his whole look is much older and just different. His tinder pics are clearly from his early 20s. I immediately confronted him and told him his pictures are not updated and he got upset and said he had gained the weight because he was ill and finds it ridiculous that I brought it up. I explained to him that I'm not here to make him feel terrible, but that I firmly believe no matter where you are physically, your online pictures should just reflect that accurately. My online pictures are always current and reflective of how I look like on the day to day, and if anything changes, even as much as my hair style, I re-update them. He agreed and said he still wants to meet up. I told him I did not want to waste his time and cancelled the date and we parted ways before meeting.

Could I have handled this better? How have you all dealt with these situations?

TL/DR: How to address a catfish situation and how to prevent them from happening?
