Why did this guy ask me out KNOWING I have a boyfriend?

So long story short, a bit over a month ago I was asked to join a group regarding my 10 year high school reunion. I got a friend request from a guy whom I recognized, but didn't talk a whole lot to in middle and high school.

I clearly state I am in a relationship publicly and in my heading on Facebook. He had come up on hard times with a chick he dated for 3 months who was texting a friend saying she was naked in bed and to come over. I saw the fall out on fb. Lol needless to say he dumped her.

Me, being a nice gal, decided to give him advice when he was saying "hey any single gals want to go out with a good guy?" First commenter suggested he put his personal life elsewhere and I told him to try online dating because I met my boyfriend there.

Fast forward a couple weeks later and he messages me and is just talking and talking. He says he was sorry he made fun of my last name in school (don't remember it) and that he always had a crush on me. I was an odd duck in high school and he says you were just unique. He asked me where I lived, what my job was these days, and basically said lets get coffee. I obviously said uh no. Told him I lived with my bf and lived an hour away. He pressed a bit further, but seemed to get the hint.

...But is it just me or does this guy KNOW this already and why would you try it knowing that? Lol I'm just curious what you folks think of that.
