How to flirt with a shy guy?

I(20F) know this guy, and have a small crush on him, but i find it hard to flirt with him. Even hold a conversation with him, because hes so shy. He is like that with everyone. Im not the best at flirting and tend to be very direct, but i dont want to scare him away. Any advice?
