Got strep throat after giving my boyfriend a blowjob. How to prevent this in the future?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask for help with this. This is a question I'd really like to ask maybe someone in the medical field, but I don't think it's medically related enough to not get me banned from a medical focused sub. It's a throwaway account anyway so whatever lol.

Either way, I gave my boyfriend a blowjob for the first time not too long ago for his birthday, and we both loved it. He didn't cum in my mouth (there was some precum) because he needs thrusting in order to cum, but I could not handle being throat fucked for too long. Especially after I had deepthroated him a few times and had been working on him for like 20-30 minutes already. I was getting lock jaw by the time I told him I wanted him to cum in my mouth, and he basically started pounding the back of my throat. Where my tonsils happen to live. Eventually, I just stopped blowing him and climbed on top to ride it out, and the evening ended enjoyably.

This was on Saturday/Midnight of Sunday. Fast-forward to Wednesday, my throat is feeling a little iffy, but honestly, I'm used to it. Just moved to a very large major city with like 4 million people from a more midsized city with like 600k. The air quality is ATROCIOUS here from all of the fuel exhausts from the cars. There is literal smog in the air. So bad that I had to start wearing my mask whenever I go out because I think I was having an allergic reaction and my throat was having issues. Because of those past issues, I just assumed it was that.

Nope, wake up Thursday and my throat is in terrible pain. That's a new symptom, and the pain got so bad I actually looked in the back of my throat and saw white spots/build-up, whatever it was, and was freaked the fuck out. This has NEVER happened to me before. Never got strep or a bacterial throat infection in my life! Thursday was a holiday though, so means I couldn't see anyone for help or treatment. And, when I finally did, it was a journey. Long story short, I had to see a nurse practitioner, 2 PAs, and a doctor between a CVS Minute Clinic, Urgent Care, and the ER to finally get treatment. This was over a series of like 2 days of me progressively getting worse and being told by Urgent Care I needed to go to the hospital or I might die from my airways closing up from the swelling. I got a strep test at the CVS before going to UC or the ER. Two actually and both came back negative. I also got some STD tests at Urgent Care before they whisked me off to the ER. Just in case.

Thankfully, after 3 days of pure hell, I am feeling better now after get some steroid shots at the ER and starting antibiotics. Needless to say, I never want to go through this again. Bear in mind, I could have gotten strep from literally anywhere. I take public transportation daily, live among 4 other people who have people coming in and out frequently, and I work at a university. So, this does not necessarily mean my boyfriend has a dirty dick. But yeah, I have worked at a previous university for like 5 years and never had this problem, and I was around WAY more people than I am at my current job. Even during the height of COVID times. Plus, like I said, never had strep or a bacterial throat infection a day in my life until now. Not even during school.

Then again, I have been having throat issues since I got here, so it could have been a combination of me already having something, introducing new bacteria from my boyfriend's dick into my system, plus him beating up my tonsils with said dick (which if you don't know, your tonsils are the front line of your immune system, which fights all the icky bad stuff that tries to kill you daily).

I'm saying all this to ask, if oral sex is a possible trigger, is there anyway for me to avoid this in the future? I love going down on my boyfriend. Even from the first time, I really liked it (other than lockjaw and him destroying my tonsils), and I don't want to stop doing it due to being fearful of catching this awful illness or get to the point I have to get my tonsils removed. I only think it's possibly a factor because I keep reading posts where people have said they have noticed an uptick of abnormal strep cases after starting to perform oral sex on a new partner. So, you would see how someone like me who has not had it in almost 30 years of being alive would become concerned.

What can I do to help this and reduce my fear? Wash his dick with antibacterial soap before going down on him? Avoid deepthroating and just stick to licking and some light sucking? Gargle with saltwater/mouthwash after doing the deed?

I wish there was some kind of sex health sub on here. They have subs for literally anything else! Help! If anyone can.
