Why would a guy want to keep in touch?

I met this guys and we had instant chemistry. We had gone on a handful of dates and it was just easy and compatible.

He started to get a bit distance after a couple months of talking and dating. I had called him out on it and his response was that he really liked me a lot but he’s taken on a lot at work and had also agreed to try being exclusive with someone else “spontaneously a week ago”. He went on to say that it’s very fresh and he doesn’t see this person much at all either due to work and said to keep in touch along the way and be friends for now.

Is there any meaning to this or he just being nice? I don’t know why he would want to just be nice because I gave him the opportunity to be brutally honest and say if he’s just not interested. I know I shouldn’t be analyzing this but I can’t help it as this never happened before with a guy. I am 27 and he is 30. Thanks.

I’ve always been extremely private and introverted. My (23M) girlfriend (25F) relationship is confusing to me. I might be the problem, or maybe we are just incompatible.

I met my girlfriend after a few serious breakups that led me to change both intentionally and unintentionally over a few years. For better and for worse. She had just gotten out of an engagement with a verbally and physically abusive man who had a cocaine problem. We have been together about 8 months now.
