Reaching out to an ex

My ex and I recently broke up a month ago. It was a pretty civil breakup all things considered. I wanted to stay together but felt he needed to work on some of his own issues before he was ready to be in a relationship. Usually after a breakup I go no contact and that works well for me, but this breakup is sitting differently with me and I can’t really explain why.

My gut is telling me to reach out to get some clarification on something he said, but he’s an avoidant style and I wonder if he’ll even be open to having a conversation. We did end things off with him saying that I could reach out to him after a while.

I guess my question is, has anyone reached out to an ex after breaking up and have that conversation go well? How did you start that dialogue? On the flip side, would also like to hear examples of such conversations going poorly.
