Girls, help me out... BC and dating?

I'm a 22F, I have never been on a date in my life. I want to finally start putting myself out there and hopefully going on some.

Anyway, from what seems to be the general consensus, guys expect sex pretty soon into dating...like date two or three? I've never been on BC for sadly obvious reasons, lol. The idea of 'the pill' makes me nervous. I know IUD is most effective but I'm very squeamish about medical procedures and the process for those sounds awful, so I guess the pill is my best bet. Obviously, I don't want to get pregnant, but the side effects of the pill just sound so dangerous... plus, not knowing which one I'd react well too, etc.

So, I guess I have a few questions...

Do most girls go on BC specifically before they start dating? Don't you have to be on it for a month for it to work, so should I be factoring that in?

Do guys really hate condoms that much? And are they really that prone to ripping/failing?

I feel so out of my element about all of this. My mom avoids talking about uncomfortable topics and I've never had a trusted female figure to ask this stuff before :/ Sorry if this post sounds naive or immature.

I’ve always been extremely private and introverted. My (23M) girlfriend (25F) relationship is confusing to me. I might be the problem, or maybe we are just incompatible.

I met my girlfriend after a few serious breakups that led me to change both intentionally and unintentionally over a few years. For better and for worse.
