I think I am similar to your boyfriend in certain respects, so I'll offer my perspective. However, keep in mind that the whole issue here is people not interpreting and reacting to the world the same, so YMMV.

I've noticed from lurking around here there seems to be different asexual subgroups. One archetype is the sex-repulsed aromantic asexual, who can figure out fairly early on that they're not into sex or relationships. On the other side of the spectrum are people like me for whom everything seems fine until they bump up against other people's expectations, which is the first indication that they might be different. And if you're in an environment in which sex isn't really talked about this can happen surprisingly late in life.
