I can't speak for every asexual but I'm 19 and knew that I was ace since I was 13 years old and nothing has changed within those 6 years. Think about it this way, being gay, straight, lesbian, etc. is not a choice, just like being asexual, so it doesn't simply "go away". Maybe the person finds out that they're demi-sexual or grey-sexual? Then that would be the valid case but even then, these are still on the asexual spectrum.
