Struggling to do anal

So my gf wanted to try anal with me and at first I was reluctant but I eventually came to the conclusion that I wanted to experience it with her.

When we tried to do it we had foreplay before and I put on a condom. I used heaps of lube to the point my entire hand was covered in it and I tried to slowly push myself into her. When I was in I started slowly thrusting but she started whimpering/crying and screaming for more lube when my entire hand and dick was already covered. When I tried to get more lube i lost my erection from the mix of her whimpering and pulling out. I thought she was crying and I can’t stand to hurt her in any way possible but she said that although it hurts she still wanted to do it. So that kinda confuses me.

Are there any good tips I could use for staying hard when trying to continuously put on more lube. Or for me to try and enjoy it more.
