Yes, he's a normal gentleman of the Victorian era, so although he expresses huge disdain for anyone who hurts a woman (see him calling the Midwest Murderer in the Hound of the Baskervilles a brute for beating his wife) he also regards the gender as relatively weaker, and less reliable. This is why when Irene outsmarted him, she became "the woman" to him because he respected her as much as a man.
