/u/xSky888x on If your “aceness” was in fact hormonal, would you “cure” it?

If you have a hormonal imbalance it can mess up a lot of things. People often don't realize how important hormones are to your whole body, it's not just sex and gender stuff.

Overwhelmingly ace people don't usually have hormone issues, and there are quite a few trans aces around who can confirm their hormones are tested regularly and they're still ace (hello I am one.)

However, if someone did have a hormone issue it could lead them to having symptoms that could be mistaken for asexuality. Low libido, one possible symptom, is often mistaken for asexuality and if your hormones are messed up it could put you in a place where you have no desire to be with people sexually or even romantically. And if your hormones are out of whack it could lead to physical deficiencies with sex as well, leading people to think there's a lack of attraction.

If you think you might have a hormone issue it's important to get checked. There's absolutely no shame in identifying as ace but then changing later, as long as you don't use your personal experience to be aphobic. And even if someone has a hormone issue it doesn't mean that they can't also just be an asexual who happens to have a medical issue.
